Job Description and Duties
Incumbents in this class administer active, passive, and resistive therapeutic exercises and local or general massage, muscle training and corrective exercises, and coordination work; administer hydrotherapy treatments; assist in administering various types of electrotherapy including ultraviolet, infrared, diathermy and inductothermy; instruct clients in walking, standing, balance, use of crutches, cane, or walker and in the care of braces and artificial limbs; demonstrate plans for the construction of home equipment such as walkers and wheelchairs, and assist parents in planning their construction; take pulse, temperature, weights, and measurements of clients; observe clients undergoing treatment and report unusual occurrences and physical condition of clients to medical officers and supervisors; attend clinics and keep clinical notes and records and make reports; maintain the treatment room and equipment in sanitary condition; order necessary equipment and supplies.
In accordance with the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) State Public Health Order issued on August 5, 2021 and amended on December 22, 2021, Department of State Hospital Operational Procedure SQIP-OP-8311 and Policy Directive 5112, all workforce members in the Department of State Hospitals must meet the department’s vaccination/booster requirement for COVID-19. The Public Health Order also provides limited exemptions from the vaccination/booster requirement for religious beliefs or qualifying medical reasons. A completed, signed COVID-19 Vaccination Exemption form (DSH-3363) must be provided. To be eligible for a Qualified Medical Reason, a written statement signed by a physician, nurse practitioner, or other licensed medical professional practicing under the license of a physician stating that the individual qualifies for the exemption and indicating the probable duration of the worker’s inability to receive the vaccine, is required with the completed declination form.
A COVID-19 vaccine/booster dose may be available and provided to candidates, who are selected for hire at DSH-Coalinga during the pre-employment process.
Working Conditions
The employee is required to work any shift and schedule in a variety of settings throughout the hospital and may be required to work overtime and float to other work locations as determined by the operational needs of the hospital. All employees are required to have an annual health review and repeat health reviews whenever necessary to ascertain that they are free from symptoms indicating the presence of infection and are able to safely perform their essential job duties.

DSH-Coalinga opened in 2005 and began treating forensically committed patients, mostly of which are sexually violent predators. It is a self-contained psychiatric hospital constructed with a security perimeter. California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) provides perimeter security as well as transportation of patients to outside medical services and court proceedings.
